Before the United States had its own currency, it was Spanish Gold Escudos that exchanged hands in commerce. The coins were even granted legal tender status by the Second Continental Congress in 1776 and were used as legal tender until 1857. They were truly America’s first Gold Double Eagles!
But while American collectors are chiefly concerned with the coin’s connection and importance to the fledgling United States economy, the legend and lore of the Gold Escudo coins were not limited to America’s shores alone. These coins are synonymous with legendary tales of bloodthirsty pirates and their chests of buried treasure. They were also struck in several places along the Spanish Main throughout the New World
AMERICA’S FIRST GOLD DOUBLE EAGLE – The Spanish Gold Eight Escudo was America’s first gold Double Eagle. The U.S. coin that came after it mimicked its size, weight and design.
SPANISH COINS THAT WERE UNITED STATES LEGAL TENDER – Despite being Spanish currency, these gold coins were accepted as official legal tender in the United States up until 1857. Each coin will be sealed in an acrylic coin holder.
